WHEN DO YOU NEED TO TAKE THIS COURSE?

Under Age 18 – Teen Driving Law:
Ohio’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system is required for all drivers under 18. The GDL has three phases: Temporary Permit (Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC)), Probationary Driver’s License, and Full License (No Restrictions). Before moving from Phase 1 (Temporary Permit) to Phase 2 (Probationary License), teens must meet all permit requirements and complete the following:

  • Class D, 24-Hour Driver Education Course,
  • 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed instructor,
  • 50 hours of supervised driving, including at least 10 hours of night driving, with a licensed driver age 21 or older; and
  • BMV 5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit, completed and notarized

* You may enroll and begin the Online/Mobile App Course without having a TIPIC. However, you must have your TIPIC by the time you complete the course, as your Completion Certificate cannot be issued without a valid number on file.

Under 21 Driver Training (Ages 18–20):
Drivers between 18 and 20 must also complete all of the same requirements above if:

  • You are a new driver under age 21, or
  • You fail any portion of the driving test while under the age of 21

Non-Renewable / Non-Transferable (Limited Term) Licenses:
Applicants for a Limited Term License must complete the same Driver Education requirements listed above before scheduling their Driving Tests with an Ohio Driver Examiner. This applies to temporary residents who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. If your permit states “non-renewable, non-transferable,” these requirements apply to you.
