Ohio Class D Adult Driver Education Requirements

Who Should Take This Course?
Adults Ages 18–20: All new drivers under age 21 — including those aged 18, 19, and 20 — must complete the full 24-Hour Adult Class D Course before qualifying for an Ohio license.

Temporary Residents / Limited Term Applicants: Applicants seeking a Limited Term License (Non-Renewable) under the Limited Term License Program must meet all Class D education requirements when applicable. This includes non-U.S. citizens or temporary residents issued a non-renewable permit.

24-Hour Online Classroom Instruction – fully state-approved, completed entirely online at your own pace. The course includes Module Quizzes and a Final Exam (50 multiple-choice questions, 75% passing score) that must be passed to receive your Certificate of Completion.
Official Certificate of Completion – issued within 3 business days after passing the Final Exam; required before scheduling behind-the-wheel training.
8-Hour Behind-the-Wheel Training – arranged separately with a licensed instructor in Ohio.
50-Hour Driving Practice – including at least 10 hours at night, supervised by a licensed driver age 21 or older.
BMV 5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit – completed and notarized to verify your practice hours.

Important Note: You may enroll and begin the course without having a permit. However, you must have your permit (TIPIC or appropriate permit) by the time you complete the course and before behind-the-wheel training.
